How Many Cooks in the Kitchen? The Roles of Consumers and the Government in Making Our Food Safe
Over 48 million Americans get sick from food each year, and 3,000 die. Who bears responsibility for ensuring that the food supply is safe? The federal government, states, industry, and consumers all have vital roles to play. The federal government is on the verge of implementing a host of new food safety rules, including those stemming from the Food Safety Modernization Act, the New Poultry Inspection System, new approaches to curtailing antibiotic use in food production, and more. Now more than ever, consumers have a voice to effect change and want to use that voice to promote effective programs that will protect their health. States also have a number of important programs and opportunities to impact the policies of the federal government.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a consumer advocacy organization whose twin missions are to conduct innovative research and advocacy programs in health and nutrition, and to provide consumers with current, useful information about their health and well-being
